Reckless Recap: 9/26/15 Cubs 0/Pirates 4 "Celebration Day?"

by Boutros Boutros Ghali

The Cubs got owned by Francisco Liriano on Saturday. The Cubs could not score and barely put together any hits in the game, but that did not stop them from having a party in the clubhouse following an embarrassing loss.

The Handsome Youngster may as well have been old and ugly because the game looked like the sweater your grandmother gave you that never saw anything but the back of the closet. The pitching was not bad, but any time your lineup puts up zero runs, it does not matter what the pitchers do; still gonna lose.

Jason Hammel kept the Pirates off the boards for four innings, but Hammel is only a five inning guy so you know what happened in the fifth. Jordy LaForge hit a three run homer off the holodeck in left center and Cubs fans were wishing it was not real.

Homerun Hammel gave up two more singles in the fifth inning giving the Pirates more hits in the fifth than the Cubs had all game. Grimmlock entered and got one out and gave up one walk so Captain Hook went quickly to his current favorite bail out guy, Trevor Cahill, to help right the ship. Cahill got the Cubs out of the inning without giving up another run, but the game was already over at this point.

The Cubs heads were clearly in the clubhouse partying from the first pitch in this game. The focus was not on hitting at all and only Kris Bryant looked like he was interested in scoring.

The Cubs did not even get to the bullpen until there were already two outs in the seventh inning, but then Tommy Hunter gave up another run to make sure that the Cubs had no real hope of getting back into the game. It was a crappy offensive performance all around, but don't worry, they still had a party after the game.

The Cubs season was extended by one game in the middle of the Chicago night on Friday when the San Francisco Giants lost. That loss locked up the Cubs spot in the Wild Card Game this year.

Look, I'm not an asshole. I am just as excited to see the Cubs get the chance to make it to the playoffs (which the WC Game is not) as the next guy. I just don't think having a party to celebrate being the number 2 WC team after the team has lost 3 straight games is ridiculous. Especially when the team that beat you is the currently the other WC team.

(If you need something ugly to go with that stupid sweater at the back of the closet, you can buy this stupid fucking hat on Amazon as well.)

I'm not saying there should not be a celebration. I think there should be. I just don't think it should have been Saturday after three losses. If the team wants to celebrate, they should either do it on Oct. 4th after the last game of the season or, because it is their last regular season home game, on Sept. 28th.

I've been taking a lot of grief on Twitter and Facebook about this, but I'm not backing down. I know Cubs fans are happy. Cubs fans should be celebrating. Friday night, there should have been viewing parties all over Chicago for FANS to go nuts when the Giants lost.

I just think what the Cubs TEAM did on Saturday was misplaced. Three losses (have I mentioned that yet), getting into the postseason (not playoffs) because another team lost, playing the team that has the current top WC spot, and with another game the next day. Bleh. It's like getting a big tongue kiss from your aunt. (I'm looking at you Cardinals fans.)

This team is amazing. Or should I say Magic? They should celebrate being awesome, but I wish they could have done it in a less showy, less cognitively dissonant, less unaware way. Leave that to the fans and take the time to celebrate later when it would be more appropriate. Like after their last home game or after the last game of the season.

Anyway, they partied it up and had a damn good time. It will be interesting to see how long the party lasted and if they will be ready for Arrieta's start today. They clearly were not ready to play yesterday.

Hopefully, Arrieta is good enough to carry a hung over team to a win because it will make the celebration even more off if the best pitcher in the Major Leagues gets no support because the team wanted to have an ill conceived, premature party before his last regular season start at Wrigley Field this season.

That's your Reckless Recap. Buy those "Postseason" hats on Amazon and enjoy wearing them for the next two weeks until the Cubs win the Wild Card and you need to get a "Playoff" hat that you get to wear for a month until it's time to buy the "World Series" hat. I'll  hold off until that one is available, but if you want multiple hats commemorating the upcoming magical run, just click on the Amazon link at SonRanto.com.
