Reckless Recap: 9/30/15 Cubs 10/Reds 3 "Short Stops"

by Boutros Boutros Ghali

The Cubs trounced the Reds again on Wednesday as they continue to roll towards the postseason. Jon Lester got the start and after one iffy inning, completely dominated the Reds lineup for 8 strong innings.

The Reds were using an actual major league pitcher on Wednesday so it took the handsome youngsters a little while to get to DeSclafani, but once they did, it was a flood of runs that the Reds could not stop.

Johnny Paycheck got touched in the first inning after giving up a single and a double. The Man With Two First Names hit a sacrifice fly to allow Torry Holt, the former Rams wide receiver, to score easily.

The first inning seems to be the only time an opposing team can actually get to Lester these days and one run was not going to cut it for the Communists especially when they were walking the notoriously bad hitting pitcher.

Jon Lester, the ninth batter in this game, drew the 2 out base on balls against DeSclafani in the third. This allowed Hulk Schwarber and Action Jackson to get another look at the pitcher, which was bad for him.

Schwarbs hit a single to move Lester to second base and then Action Jackson picked up two RBI with a double to right center field. Jackson hit the ball all the way to the base of the outfield wall and despite a quick bounce back to Jay Bruce, both Lester and Schwarber were able to score on the play. Nobody expects the Hulk to be fast, but the stout catcher has some wheels and beat the throw to the plate with a good slide to beat the tag. Cubs 2-Reds 1.

As Lester got better, DeSclafani continued to get beat up. Lester ended up retiring 24 out of 25 straight batters in this game. DeSclafani did not.

In the fourth inning, Addison Russell singled to drive in Rizzo. Cubs 3-Reds 1.

In the fifth inning, Action Jackson doubled to drive in Jon Lester who got another hit! That tells you where the Reds pitching is right now. Cubs 4-Reds 1.

In the sixth inning, Starlin Castro opens the frame by pegging a Reds fan sitting in center field and not watching the game. Cubs 5-Reds 1.

DeSclafani was not doing well in this game, so they brought in LeCure for what was ailing them. (see what I did there?) Sam LeCure worked six total outs over two innings to be the only Reds pitcher not to give up a run in this game.

In the eighth inning, the Communists trotted out Cingrani and he trotted in a run. Castro singled, Baez doubled, and then Russell bunted for a base hit to load the bases. Bases were loaded with short stops and the question of what to do with all these short stops was finally answered. Put them on base.

The Norf Sider knows what a ball looks like and was not fooled by Cingrani. Denorfia earns the RBI with a bases loaded walk that scored Castro. Action Jackson was back for two more RBI with a single and the Cubs were leading 8-1 at the end of the 8th inning.

The Cubs are ruthless right now and they were having fun beating on the Reds. In the ninth inning, with a 7 run lead, the Cubs knocked in two more runs to get to an even 10 on the night.

Rizzo singled. Castro doubled for his fourth hit of the night and that scored Rizzo from first base. Then Addison Russell doubled to score Castro because you can never have too many short stops. Cubs 10/Reds 1.

And just so you don't think we are forgetting about Joe Maddon, the Cubs manager was having all sorts of fun in this game too. It started with batting the pitcher 9th, which he has only done on a few games this year.

Fowler got a day off with Jackson out in center field for the whole game. Soler started in right field, but was replaced in the order by Javy Baez, who took over at third base, which moved Bryant to left field and bumped Schwarber over to right field.

Szczdzfzur got some playing time in the left field for Bryant, and Denorfia took over Schwarber's spot in right field in the 8th inning. In the 9th inning, Tommy LaStella got some time at third base and Javy Baez moved over to first base just for shits and giggles.

Neil Ramirez took over for Lester in the ninth inning and between him and the unique defense behind him, the Reds were finally able to score a couple of runs. Not that it mattered with a nine run lead heading into the inning.

So the Cubs finally found multiple spots for all those short stops. Not that it was hard after they figured out how to use three catchers all season. How's that for some fun. And for some more fun, I leave you with the man of the night with his 5 RBI: Action Jackson. I'm pretty sure this is a documentary.

That's your Reckless Recap! Go Cubs, let's get win number 94 today.

Danny Rockett continues to work on the Cubs Canon 15, which is an album of songs dedicated to this team. You can support this artistic endeavor by donating through the Go Fund Me link on this website.

Most are fun and funny parodies of other songs, but yesterday he released a new one that gets at the heart what many people are going through with this team. Take a listen to the newest tune, We Will Someday.
