Cubs vs Cards: Chatwood, but He Didn't

By Michael Cotton

Game 1 between the Cubs and Cards got postponed for weather, but game 2 being played at night in freezing temps was good to go on Tuesday night. The story of the game for the Cubs was Tyler Chatwood with lots of walks and lots of strikeouts with no rhyme or reason as to which was going to happen. Chatwood threw 93 pitches in 4-2/3 innings with 7 Ks and 7 walks. He only gave up 1 hit and 2 runs, but that was more than Wainwright.

On the red side, Adam Wainwright wasn't much better, but the umpires thought he was. His strikes and Chatwoods balls were sharing the same cloth, but only half were getting love. Wainwright went 5 innings, had 4 walks and 5 Ks while giving up 4 hits and 1 run.

The Captain, Anthony Rizzo returned after a stint on the 10 day DL nursing some back pain he acquired in a Queen City hotel room and immediately got hit by a pitch. Of course, it's not a Cubs vs Cards series if some BFIB is not blaming the Cubs for throwing at their guys.

@SportsHuman writes, "Breaking ball hits Rizzo, Maddon responds with a fastball up, classy."

Also, Contreras got hit later in the game, but the BFIB was silent and the Cubs did not hit any of the Cardinals' batters.

Heyward got an RBI to cut the lead in half in the 4th inning. Steve Cishek entered to get the last out of the 5th inning and stuck around to handle the entire 6th as well. Carl's Jr. struck out the side in the 7th, but the Cardinals got to Strop in the 8th for three runs, which thoroughly embarrassed his dead relatives.

Javy Baez took one to the seats in the Cubs' half of the 8th for a 2 run homer off of Greg Holland. He finished the night 3-4 and only a triple shy of the cycle.

Joe Maddon played some chess with Matheny and it seemed as if he lost when Almora got burned to get rid of Tyler Lyons and then Tommy LaStella entered and got embarrassed by Bud Norris. That was the last chance of the Cubs as they went quietly in the ninth for a 5 loss.
